- Q. What is the role of the Learning Consultant?
- Each learner enrolled in SelfDesign will be assigned a SelfDesign-trained teacher called a Learning Consultant (LC). While the majority of our LCs are certified teachers, some are learning specialists who may not be certified but who offer valuable life experience. For the Portfolio and Ultimate levels, where assessment and documentation is necessary, a certified teacher will work alongside the learning specialist for those program elements. The Learning Consultant's main role is to work in cooperation and collaboration with the learner and parents to support and help account for learning. Initially, LCs will work with families to enable children to develop and achieve their SelfDesign Learning Plans, after which they will monitor learners' tracking of learning each week, reflecting on and responding to weekly Observing for Learning entries sent to them by parents and/or learners (who wish to do their own reporting). Learning Consultants also work with families to review and report on children's learning plans 2-3 times each year (for Portfolio and Ultimate levels), and they may provide additional services to a learner and/or family based on special contractual agreements. All of our consultants and learning specialists have had criminal record checks.
- Q. What is the nature of communication between learner/family and their LC?
- Regular and consistent communication between family and LC is key to the success of our program, and the exact nature of that communication, as well as the particular schedule, will be decided in conversation between you and your consultant.
- Q. What if a family or learner is experiencing difficulty with a Learning Consultant?
- If, after you have tried to communicate openly with your Learning Consultant, you find you are still having difficulties, please contact the appropriate person for your program: River Meyer (Foundations Director for parenting coaching), Darrell Letourneau (SelfDesign Global Director for grades K-8), Michael Maser (SelfDesign Global Teen Director for high school learners), and they will assist in working issues through to a positive outcome for all parties.
